This is the official mask of Lon Chaney's clown in the 1924 movie, 'He Who Gets Slapped'. This clown apparently started out as a scientist who was betrayed by his wife and best friend, taking away his success. He is crushed and becomes a dejected clown who lets himself be slapped in the face, making his audiences squirm.
